Mastering Human Factors in Management and Leadership:  Simulation and Optimization of Complex Systems - The Vision of COMTESSA

Contemporary society depends decisively on the availability of infrastructures such as energy, telecommunication, and transportation, banking and finance, health care, and governmental and public administration. Even a selective disturbance of one of these infrastructures may result in disruptions of governmental, industrial or public functions. Vulnerability of infrastructures therefore offers spectacular leverage for natural disasters as well as criminal actions.

Threats and risks are part of the technological, economical, and societal development. Increasing complexity of our critical infrastructures exacerbates consequences of natural and/or man-made disasters. Not only primary effects, but also cascading effects as result of increasing dependencies and interdependencies of our technological and societal systems, demand application of intelligent simulation and optimization techniques.

Very often the human factors perspective is neglected although it is the crucial factor in a modern “system of system” perspective. This presentation provides an overview of the simulation and optimization of complex networks from the human factors’ perspective. Approaches based on systems engineering, risk and security management, computational intelligence, system dynamics, and data farming are integrated to master such complex adaptive networks via command and control systems, with a special emphasis on human factors in management and leadership. These are applied to meet modelling and simulation and decision support system challenges in aerospace, intermodular transportation systems, energy networks, and aviation management via the synthesis of innovative sensor networks, network control, and reach-back architectures for adaptive information and smart management systems.
